Imphal, April 17 2017:
The All Manipur Student's Union observed the 37th Realisa-tion Day by offering floral tributes at the students' memorial tomb located at Pishum Chingamacha today.
Many organisations, students and people took part in the event which was organised in remembrance of the April 17, 1980 event where two students, Potsangbam Lukhoi (Premananda) and Huidrom Loken were killed and many sustained injuries when AMSU along with the people of Manipur launched protests demanding non locals to leave the State.
As a part of the observation, a public rally was held with the participants shouting slogans demanding im- plementation of Inner Line Permit System and repeal of AFSPA from the State.

They also decried participation of non-locals in State elections.
After offering floral tributes to the memorial stone, the rally concluded at Manipur College multipurpose hall where a public meeting as well as a blood donation camp was organised.
Ex-AMSU president Ayekpam Dijen, former AMSU president Kongkham Brojen, former AMSU secretary Irom Mangi and AMSU president Manjit Sarangthem took part in the meeting as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the event, Ayekapam Dijen said that the 1980 protest was held to protect indigenous population of the State from being overwhelmed by the influx of non-locals.
He pointed out that the indigenous people of the State have a grim future ahead if the people do not work together to curb the unchecked influx of non-local people.
AMSU president Manjit said that the population of non-locals has grown exponentially with areas like Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Kanglatongbi, Saparmeina, Sagolmang, Serou, Ching-meirong, Mantripukhri, Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar, Sugnu, Kumbi etc being dominated by non-locals.
He urged the authority concerned to enforce Inner Line Permit System in the State taking into account the survival and conservation of the indigenous population adding that the Government has a responsibility to look into the matter at the earliest.
He claimed that non-locals have been settling at different places of the State at an alarming rate, be it the valley, hills or even the forest areas after clearing them.
Manjit appealed to the people to work towards checking growth of the non local population warning that after some years Manipur might just become like Tripura where the indigenous population has been transformed into a minority.
Many volunteers also donated blood in the blood donation camp organised in collaboration with RIMS Blood Bank as a part of the event.
