Thoubal, October 11 2020:
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has accused ex-MLA Paonam Brojen of politicising food grains since he joined BJP.
Addressing an election rally held at Tekcham today, Ibobi said that Brojen was distributing 10 Kgs of rice to each BJP supporter while the monthly PDS rice allocation for supporters of Congress and other parties has been limited to just 5 Kgs each.
Distribution of rice under PDS is done under a specific Government programme and it cannot be manipulated.
However, in Wangjing-Tentha AC, ex-MLA P Brojen has been manipulating the scheme to suit his own selfish interests thereby victimising a lot of people, Ibobi said.
He urged the gathering to ponder over the reason for going to by-election even though the five-year term is yet to be completed.
Reacting to the claim of Congress MLAs who have switched allegiance to BJP that they would be able to serve the people better and take up more development works if they are in the camp of the ruling party, the CLP leader remarked that these ex-MLAs were only trying to befool the people of their respective Assembly Constituencies.
Those representatives who do not have any qualms in hopping from one party to another in pursuit of their own selfish interests are not genuine leaders of the masses, Ibobi said.
They are only self-serving people and they must be taught a befitting lesson in the upcoming by-election.
Sugnu AC MLA K Ranjit said that Congress party committed a big folly by allotting party ticket to Paonam Brojen in the last Assembly election and he apologised to the people of Wangjing-Tentha AC for the same.
Blaming P Brojen for dragging the people of Wangjing-Tentha AC to by-polls in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ranjit said that Brojen is a virus deadlier than COVID-19.He then questioned the conscience of all those people who wish to re-elect P Brojen after he had relinquished the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly prematurely.
Arm twisting activities are galore in the State today because the incumbent Government was formed through arm twisting tactics and a man known for arm twisting tactics is sitting on the chair of the Chief Minister, Ranjit said.
M Hemanta who is contesting the by-election on Congress ticket urged the people of Wangjing-Tentha AC to be wary of those individuals who believe in buying votes.
Hemanta said that everyone must be aware of the anti-Muslim disposition of BJP.
CWC Member and former Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, MPCC president M Okendro, former speaker N Lokeshwor, veteran politician O Joy, MLAs K Meghachandra and Govindas Konthoujam were also present at the rally.
