TET in Meetei Mayek soon: Minister

Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro has declared that efforts are on to conduct Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) in Meetei Mayek as the indigenous script would be a subject in forthcoming matriculation examinations.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 68th birth anniversary celebration of Meetei Mayek advocator (late) Chingsubam Akaba at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound today, Minister Okendro expressed that taking into account inevitability of upgrading Meetei Mayek as a school syllabus teachers too have be well versed with the script.
Releasing the first Meetei Mayek journal of Manipur on the occasion besides launching a calendar on the indigenous script, Okendro maintained that Meetei Mayek class currently taught in class VIII standard would be upgraded to a higher level in subsequent years/sessions and thus there is need for selecting qualified teachers to further promote and develop the script.

Calling up subject experts from the script campaigner MeeLAL to contribute its mite in the Government's endeavour to further develop Meetei Mayek, he informed that the Government is planning to arrange lodging facility for candidates from distant hill district areas who would appear in the forthcoming TET examination.
In order to develop the indigenous script concerted effort is being made to establish a separate Directorate of Language Cell, said the Minister who also announced that a Government polytechnic institution would be set-up in each of the nine districts along with opening up of BEd colleges.
Remembering Chingsubam Akaba as an individual who strived to promote national integration, he also strongly condemned slaying individuals who work for ushering overall development in the State.
Describing Oja Akaba as a visionary and committed leader, functional president (former Minister) RV Mingthing attributed cordial coexistence of various communities in Manipur to the relentless efforts of Akaba.
Reminding all concerned that inclusion of Meetei Mayek as a school syllabus is due to Akaba's contribution, he emphasised that every section of the society needs to sustain the momentum for further promoting the indigenous script.
Offering of floral tributes at the portrait of Akaba, presentation of cultural items by school children and patriotic songs marked the anniversary celebration, which was also attended by Kangla Fort Board Member Sairem Nilbir, AMWJU president A Mobi and All Manipur Students' Guardian Organisation advisor Namoijam Tomba.
The first Meetei Mayek journal called Pandam was also released as a part of the celebration organised by Luchingpurel Chingusam Akaba Ningsing Lup (Lucanil) .
