Five members of cattle lifting gang held

Imphal, September 06 2011: Five members of a gang engaged in stealing cattle have been arrested by Patsoi police along with a cow and a mini truck used in stealing cattle.

Parading the thieves, the cow and the seized mini truck before media persons today, OC of Patsoi police station Lisam Premchand said that the five individuals were arrested one after another in the course of an investigation launched after receiving a complaint from one Konthoujam Raghu (67) about the loss of a pair of cows in the night of August 24 .

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Khamba Shah (34) of Khomidok Umang Leikai, Md Basir Khan (34) of the same locality, Md Zahid Khan alias Inaocha (28) of Kwakta Terakhongshangbi, Md Zaheruddin Khan (57) of Kwakta Terakhongshangbi and Huidrom Shyam alias Shyamkishore (42) of Naransena but staying at Ishok Lai.

Acting on a specific tip off that the stolen cow was seen at Khomidok Umang Leikai, a team of Patsoi police moved into the area.

One cow was found tethered in the courtyard of one Md Rajauddin.

On questioning, Rajauddin said that the cow was brought there by Basir Khan.

But when the police team went to Basir's house, he had fled in advance.

Local people said that they saw a pair of cows tethered in the courtyard of Basir Khan for two days since August 25.They also informed that one cow had been sold in the market.

Later Khamba Shah was nabbed from his house on August 31.This was followed by the arrest of Basir from Paona Keithel on September 3, said OC Premchand.

As Basir was being led out, he pushed aside two police personnel and jumped into Nambul river from Khwai bridge.

He came up and ran into a building with his head bleeding.

He was arrested a few minutes later with the help of Imphal West commandos.

Acting on the disclosure of Khamba and Basir, Zahid Khan was pulled up from Moirang Lamkhai last night after which Huidrom Shyam was also arrested from his home at Ishok.

Zaheruddin Khan was also nabbed from Sangaiprou the same night.

Along with seizure of a mini truck used by them in stealing cattle, a cow has also been recovered.

The pair of cows were stolen from Konthoujam by Zahid and Zaheruddin Khan while Basir was driving the mini truck.

Zaheruddin led the cows to Manao hills and then the cows were put in the truck which carried the animals to Khomidok.

Many cattle stolen by the gang were sold in Mayang Imphal and Kwakta, said OC Premchand while adding that Huidrom Shyam is an important member of the gang.
