'Locals of Thanga have major role to play in protecting Sangai'

Forests and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today said that people of Thanga Assembly Constituency have a major role to play in protecting Sangai, brow-antlered deer or the dancing deer which is only found in Manipur.
Th Shyamkumar said that Sangai can be conserved successfully with the joint effort of the Government and local residents.
Speaking as the chief guest in a tree plantation cum awareness programme on 'Conserve Environment and Save Sangai � The Pride of Manipur' organised by the Forest Department in connection with the World Environment Day at Phouoibee Lairembi community hall, Keibul Lamjao, Bishnupur district.

Shyamkumar further said that the BJP-led State Government has already started the discussion on welfare programs for the people of the Thanga AC.
He assured that he will report to Chief Minister N Biren Singh the issues faced by the people including lack of drinking water.
Appealing to all to plant more trees, Th Shyamkumar said that collective effort can save the environment.
He also announced that monetary aid will be given for maintaining the trees and the environment.
T Robindro Singh, Chairman, Planning and Development Authority (PDA) also spoke in length on the importance of maintaining the ecological balance.
Expressing concern over the rapid change in the climatic condition across the globe, Robindro Singh said, "If we do not do something to maintain the ecological balance from now on, humanity will extinct" .
M Asnikumar, vice chairman Manipur Infrastructure Development Agency (MIDA) Manipur, said that it is unfortunate that Ethai Barrage of Loktak Hydro Project has a negative impact on the eco-system of Keibul Lamjao National Park.
Socio-economy of the people living near Keibul Lamjao National Park has been severely affected due to the prohibitory measures. As part of the function, Keibul Lamjao National Park view point building was inaugurated by Th Shyamkumar.
Ahead of the function, dignitaries also planted saplings.
