Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam today called for linking research with education for sustainable development of North East particularly Manipur.
Discussions on Research and Educational Priorities for Transforming North East India" organised by Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal at its conference hall .
He said that while there are problems afflicting the region, no sincere efforts have been made to systematically and scientifically prioritise the problems and also to find/identify the solutions .
He called upon educationists, scientists and students to work beyond degrees and to work towards sustainable development of the region .
He went on to say that young minds need to be ignited, motivated and inspired because problems keep coming and there are no ready-made solutions for the problems .

Many people conduct researches in the State and people getting Ph Ds are frequently inserted in newspapers, he said while stressing that people need to be innovative and consider about the problems that are likely to be encountered after 10 or 20 years .
Radheshyam pointed out that the State is considering establishment of engineering college in the State and added that there is need to first draw a vision on what the institute is going to produce in the coming 10 or 20 years .
He even suggested that doing research on nuclear energy and solar energy will be of immense use while adding that humankind will rely on these energy sources in the future .
Radheshyam also said that a feasibility study has been conducted along with experts on whether farming can be taken out with underground water under a project called "Drift Irrigation Project."
He also exuded confidence that the discussion will give more insight on researchers and people concerned and will definitely lead North East in bringing positive changes in the country.
Professor Dinabandu Sahoo, Director IBSD while giving his presidential speech emphasised that there is urgent need to bring rapid development in the North East through scientific based interventions and applications .
He also emphasized on the need for collaboration and cooperation among the researchers and people in the North East to plug the loopholes in the development of North East Region.
Prof Dinabandu Sahoo also expressed shock over the report that the per capita income of Manipur is far below the National average as was carried by The Sangai Express in today's edition .
Pointing out that Japan earns large revenue from cherry blossom trees by inviting 1.2 million of tourists every year in the country and by organising cherry blossom festivals, Sahoo lamented that Manipur cannot take any benefit from the cherry blossom trees that are found abundantly in the State, particularly in Mao.
Many scientists, intellectuals, academicians and students, including from different parts of the country also participated in the function.
