Rape accused convicted Law catches up after 10 years

The Sessions Court, Imphal West has today convicted a 50-year-old rape accused more than 10 years the incident of rape was reported.
The convict identified as Soubam Naoba Singh (50) s/o S Shyamo of Uripok Achom Leikai Maning works as a TT in Indian Railways at Guwahati.
The Court will announce the quantum of punishment on December 31 .
Naoba raped a mentally retarded girl in her own bedroom at Imphal at around 9 pm on August 3, 2005 .
Unfortunately, the victim passed away around seven years after the incident.
The trial of the case began at Sessions Court, Imphal West after police framed chargesheet against him under Section 376 of IPC on January 14, 2013, around eight years after the incident came to light.
After Sessions Judge Imphal West M Manojkumar announced judgment of the case during the final hearing held today, Naoba who has been on bail since the past 10 years, has been sent to judicial custody.
He was also present at the final hearing held under Sessions trial case number 12 of 2012/63/13/27 of 2015 .
The Judge announced that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Soubam Naoba had committed rape on the mentally retarded girl.
During the trial of the case that lasted for several years, 10 prosecution witnesses gave statement before the Court.
Some of them also produced documents related to the trial case from the side of the prosecution including medico legal examination report.
It may be mentioned that one of the relatives of the victim lodged a complaint regarding the rape case at Imphal police station on August 4, 2005.In her complaint, she stated that family members of the girl caught Naoba red handed while committing the crime.
However, he escaped from them and remained on the run for several months.
Following the complaint, Imphal police filed an FIR against Naoba under FIR No 239 (8) 2005 of Imphal police station under Section 376 .
Later in April 2006, police arrested Naoba from a rented house in Guwahati.
However, he was later released on bail.
Director of Prosecution Ngangom Tejkumar is the counsel of the prosecution while N Ibochouba is the counsel of the accused.
