Stepping up the public agitation in pursuance of the demand for removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, a mass sit-in-protest was held from the western gate of DM College to THAU ground at Thangmeiband today.
Womenfolk attired in Pungou Panek (traditional mourning dress of the Manipuri women) came out to take part in the demonstration from early morning till late afternoon.
They sat on either side of the road braving the hot and humid summer sun.
Banners and festoons in big-bold wordings in red colour demanding revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act and punishment of guilty AR personnel involved in the killing of Thangjam Manorama, whose death in the custody of 17 Assam Rifles has sparked wide-spread condemnation.
Responding to the call of People's Action Committee Against the Brutal Custodial killing of Th Manorama Devi, around 500 people staged a silent protest demonstration at Bampn Kampu today.
All the protestors, young and old alike of both sexes alike covered their mouths with black cloths during the demonstration held from 10 am to 5 pm.
Around 200 activists of Chanura Marup, Manipur People's Party also staged a sit-in-protest demonstration in front of the party office today demanding lifting of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur and in condemnation of the alleged double-standard of Union Home Minister of State for Home Affairs Prakash Jaiswal on the issue repealing the Act.
