Government calm, but dowpour starts to hurt Jiri river in spate, floods vast tracts

Jiribam, June 27 2012:
Fury of Jiri river has created havoc in Jiribam subdivision as almost half of the land of Jiribam were inundated by flood water leaving many families displaced.
The civil administration of Jiribam has, on a war footing, distributed rice and other essential items to the displaced families who are taking refuge at different relief camps in Jiribam.
Report of some persons being drowned in the flood water has also been received.
A VDF personnel who was attached at Jiri PS identified as L Sunil Kumar (22) s/o Surenkumar of Jiribam Kalinagar drowned when a boat turned turtle at Jiri river this morning around 8.30 .
A man identified as Jiten has also been hospitalised at Jiri Community Health Centre after he fell into the swirling water.
Meanwhile, the NH-53 Truck Owners' Association, in collaboration with the FCS department distributed 5 kg of rice each to affected families at Kalinagar, Babupara, Dibong, Islamabad, Champanagar, Lamba Sorok and Gularthol, according to president of Association, Kh Inaoba.
The association has also provided assistance to Jiten.
