New Delhi, August 26:
Army today volunteered to subject Assam Rifles personnel, accused of rape of a Manipuri woman Manorama Devi, to full DNA tests in the wake of reports that forensic tests had detected stains of semen in her clothes.
"In view of reports that the forensic reports has indicated semen and blood samples in the petticoat of Manorama Devi.
Army authorities have volunteered to subject the personnel concerned to full DNA tests", an army spokesman said here.
"Should any individual be found guilty, the army authorities stand committed to initiate strict disciplinary action expeditiously", the spokesman said.
The spokesman strongly rebutted insinuations that army was not cooperating with the inquiry.
He asserted "in the interest of justice, army has been fully cooperating with the Justice C Upendera enquiry committee" appointed by the Manipur State Government.
He said it was only for security reasons that the Army had requested for in-camera statements of the Assam Rifles personnel by the commission, which has subsequently been upheld by the Guwahati High Court.
The spokesman said in the wake of the judgement, Assam Rifles personnel were produced before the commission today in Imphal to record their statements.
