Governor hails Manipuri literature

Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has said that Manipuri literature contributes immensely to the India literature and the people of the State should be proud of this fact.
She made the statement at the Manipur State Award for Literature 2016-17 ceremony which was held at Classic Sangai, Hotel Imphal today, under the aegis of Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Govt of Manipur.
For his novel, 'Nangga Eiga Amatani', Professor Elangbam Dinamani won the Manipur State Award for Literature 2016-17 which consists of a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh, a memento, citation and a shawl.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Governor stated Manipuri literature can be further developed by translating all works to various other languages which in turn will make the people of other States or even countries aware of Manipur literature.
Sahitya Academy Award was given to 42 writers of the State after the Manipuri language was recognised by the Sahitya Academy in 1973.Some were also awarded translation prizes.
Assuring every possible aid and pointing out that only education can bring development to the society, she urged the people and the State Government to take up every necessary measures to develop Manipuri literature.
Speaking at the event, Education Minister Th Radheshyam spoke about the benefits of reading novels adding that books play a huge role in one's life.
Praising writers like Elangbam Dinamani for producing quality literature works, he conveyed that most of the youth in today's society seem to be more engrossed in technologies like mobiles and other modern amenities instead of their books.
He also stressed the importance of translating Manipuri literature to other languages for increasing its scope.
Speaking at the function, Professor Elangbam Dinamani said that he has published many literary works but the reader base is extremely low.
"A writer's sole desire is for his or her work to be read and appreciated by the people", he added.
Commissioner Education (S) and Transport M Lakshmikumar Singh was also present at the event.
