IED, mortars of WW II found

Imphal, February 24 2015:
A powerful IED was found planted at a drain at Ishirow under Heingang police station Imphal East along the Imphal-Ukhrul road by an ROP team of 45 Assam Rifles today early morning.
Three mortar shells were also found at a different spot.
According to reports culled from the spot, a team of 45 Assam Rifles and locals came across the explosive device being planted at a roadside drain in between Khabeisoi and Sajiwa jail today morning at around 6.45.

The explosive was suspected to be planted to target the security personnel.
A team of Assam Rifles cordoned off the area and halted traffic movement along the road until the bomb was defused by bomb squad and AR personnel at around 9.20 am.
Later the Assam Rifles personnel along with the bomb squad of 12 Bihar Regiment carried out a search in the surrounding areas.
A case has been taken up by Heingang PS regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, three rusted 81 mm mortar shells, believed to be of WW-II era, were discovered during excavation of earth for construction of Chingdompok-Khongjom road today.
The three mortars were detonated safely by Manipur bomb expert squad at around 12.30 pm.
