As part of the correctional measures being taken up at Sajiwa Central Jail, a handicraft centre has been opened inside the jail premises.
Talking about the new initiative to media persons this afternoon, SSP IK Muivah said that the handicraft centre was opened two weeks back.
The centre, where 25 jail inmates are actively engaged, has already started producing tools made of polythene and polythene tapes as well as carry bags.
The new initiative was taken up with a view to enable prisoners learn handicraft skills so that they can have a source of livelihood out of such vocation when they get out of prison.
Raw materials needed at the handicraft centres are being provided by jail authority.

Products manufactured at the centre would be sold inside the jail premises at subsidised rate.
In case, quantity and quality of the products can be enhanced, the products manufactured at the centre would be marketed outside, said the SSP.
Skilled craftsmen would be invited to teach the inmates on making handicraft products and enhance their skill.
Saying that the new centre has succeeded in reducing the boredom which afflicted many inmates, one of the inmates conveyed gratitude to the SSP as well as the jail authority.
Notably, facilities of Art of Living course, Yoga Course, gymnasium, music, fine arts etc have been already made available to the inmates of Sajiwa Jail under the aegis of SSP Muivah.
Informing that efforts are on to open a carpentry centre inside the jail premises, Muivah pledged that he would not hesitate to take up any measures which would be beneficial to prisoners.
Sharing what he learnt from the international conference of jail administrators held recently, IK Muivah said that the term 'jail' is no longer used in other countries.
It has been replaced by the term 'correctional centre' .
