Imphal, July 22 2021:
Six student organisations have submitted their objection to the proposed appointment of former Vice Chancellor of Manipur Technical University (MTU) L Tombi Singh as temporary Vice Chancellor to the Governor, today.
L Tombi had earlier retired as the VC of MTU and the student bodies are opposed to reappointing a retired official.
The six organisations-AIMS, AMSU, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK, in a memorandum addressed to the Governor, claimed that Prof L Tombi Singh was appointed as the first VC of MTU without any recommendations of the selection committee by the State Government in violation of the MTU Act, 2019.Continuing that Prof Tombi is above 70 years and thus cannot hold any office of a University as per the guidelines of UGC, the organisations claimed that there also is no provision for extending the tenure of the first VC.
It then cautioned that his reappointment as a temporary VC may lead to derecognition of the University (MTU) by the UGC.
Alleging that Prof Tombi has a habit of going for contract appointment rather than recruiting regular teaching and non teaching staff so that the recommendation does not go to the Executive Council for approval, the student organisations claimed that several complaints were also raised against him during his tenure as the VC.
'This is nothing but nepotism and corruption at the highest level,' they charged.
Stating that the position of VC of MTU is currently looked after by the Commissioner of Higher and Technical Education, they added that filling up the vacant post of VC of MTU as per Article 14 (1) of the MTU Act will be the correct step.
