Free corrective surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate began at Shija Hospital

A two-day "Free corrective surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate" began today at the auditorium of Shija Hospital.
The camp is jointly organised by Shija Smile Train Cleft Project, SSA Manipur and BSF.
The opening function was attended by Additional State Project Director SSA Ng Bogendro Meitei, SSA State Mission Authority Manipur Randhir, Shamsher Singh of Subsidiary Training Centre, BSF Churachandpur and Shija Hospital managing director Dr Kh Palin.
Altogether 9 children with cleft lips and cleft palates would under corrective surgical operation till tomorrow at the camp.
Starting from June 10, 2006, Shija Smile Train Clef Project has so far corrected cleft lips and cleft palates of more than 3000 children.
The project covers not only Manipur but also the neighbouring States as well as Myanmar.
The project is duly supported by SSA Manipur and BSF, said Dr Palin.
Ng Bogendro said that SSA teachers have been helping in identifying children with cleft lips and cleft palates living in remote areas.
For these children, surgery is not the last thing.
They would be enrolled in schools and introduced to formal education under SSA.
BSF Churachandpur has also been bringing children with deformed lips and palates from interior areas for treatment at Shija Hospital.
Apart from conducting surgery, the project has been paying for food and travel fares for the patients.
