Imphal, June 19:
Amnesty International today demanded an investigation into yesterdays police firing in Manipur, which killed 13 people protesting against the extension of ceasefire with the NSCN (IM) to all Naga inhabited areas in the northeast.
In a statement received here, the body said Amnesty International is concerned about reports that troops have been ordered to shoot on sight anybody defying the curfew-the Manipur government must ensure that protest are policed in accordance with UN standards although a magisterial inquiry has been announced, Amnesty wanted the government to order a high powered, prompt, thorough and independent judicial inquiry to match the seriousness of the incident.
The findings and recommendations should be made public, it said, adding that the inquiry should be carried out in conformity with standards contained in principles on the effective prevention and investigation of extra-legal, arbitrary and summary executions.
