CCpur, April 17 2020:
Top officials of the State headed by Additional Chief Secretary Suhel Akhtar and Principal Secretary P Vaiphei visited several border villages in Churachandpur's Singngat sub-division since yesterday and took stock of the preventive measures being taken up against COVID-19.The visit by the officials to the outlying villages along Indo-Myanmar border was necessitated by the recent arrests of three individuals for smuggling fuel from Myanmar.

The team which included Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur, Pawan Yadav, SP Churachandpur Amrita Sinha, Additional SP Churachandpur Shivanand Surve and SDO Singngat Jameson Hangshing among others visited Border Pillar No 37 located at Pakmual village and ordered sealing of 'stone quarrying paths' reportedly being used by smugglers.
The visit to the border areas was to find loopholes and identify porous areas to strictly enforce the complete lockdown, said officials.
When the border area is strictly being manned and patrolled by the army and the local police, lack of fences may have been compromising the lockdown leaving many porous portions of the border to smugglers' advantage.
There are many footpaths and small roads used by Shaktiman vehicles for quarrying purposes.
Without active participation of the villagers nearby in effecting the lockdown and deployment of security forces, the roads may be used by smugglers, said officials.
During the visit, the team gave awareness to village elders of Behiang, Tonjang, Jangnuam, L Canan, Suangphuh, Sehken, Sialsih, Phuaijang, Hangsum, and Pakmual and appealed them to remain vigilant and shun all cross-border movements as preventive measure against COVID-19 .
The team also appealed locals to inform any illegal or suspicious movement in the border areas to the authorities concerned to better seal the borders.
Strict actions will be taken up against those who violate the lockdown and cross border illegally, said SP Amrita while urging people to proactively support the State's effort to contain the outbreak.
The team also taught handwashing technique, benefits of wearing face masks and the need for maintaining social/physical distancing to the villagers.
They assured the locals all possible assistance during the lockdown.
The team also visited and identified a two-floor Government hostel at Singngat sub-divisional headquarters as quarantine centre.
