Imphal, October 14 2011:
Peeved with the failure of the State Government's to grant district status on Jiribam sub-division in spite of the Delimitation Commission of India's approval and sustained campaign of the people, the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) has dispatched a representation to the Prime Minister.
In their representation, the JDDC pointed out that Jiribam sub-division is situation 226 Kms away from its district headquarters (Imphal East district) and is physically separated between by Imphal West, Tamenglong and Senapati districts in between.
Being far away from its district headquarters, Jiribam encounters several administrative inconveniences inducing public grievances.
Stating that it has been a long cherished demand of the people of Jiribam to upgrade the sub-division to a full fledged district, the JDDC informed the Prime Minister that various NGOs and student organisations have submitted a number of memoranda to the Government of Manipur.
The State Government was also aware of the necessity to upgrade Jiribam sub-division to a full fledged district and it assured that the demand would be fulfilled as and when permission is granted by the Delimitation Commission of India.

However, even though the Delimitation Commission of India has given its consent to upgrade Jiribam to a full fledged revenue district, the Government of Manipur has been refraining from taking any step to fulfil the commitment it gave to the people of Jiribam repeatedly.
The JDDC also mentioned about the fast unto death strike undertaken by Khundrakpam Rajkumar Singh of Bidyanagar, Jiribam since September 15 this year.
Though he has been arrested and put in hail, Rajkumar has been continuing his hunger strike inside jail.
Highlighting all these points, the JDDC sought the Prime Minister's attention and sympathetic action in favour of the Jiribam people's long standing demand.
