Imphal, September 13 2015:
Three dogs have been rescued from an abandoned quarters inside DM College campus by a team of Imphal West police and PFA volunteers.
A statement issued by PFA managing trustee said the team broke into the quarters to rescue the confined dogs with orders from the Duty Magistrate, Alek Muivah on Saturday.
The said quarters had been allotted to one Kh Mema Devi, an Associate Professor of Zoology at DM College.
She had reportedly left the quarters some 2/3 years back allegedly leaving behind her pet dogs confined in small cages during the said period.
The Professor had been allegedly delivering food to the dogs everyday for the past few years.
Inside the quarters, the team of Imphal West police and PFA found that the dogs had bred inside the enclosure and that many had died due to various factors.
Recently, police and PFA members had visit Kh Mema urging her to take home her pet and rear them in humane ways.
Three days after the visit, PFA was reported that the dogs continue to live in the enclosed space.
The joint team paid a second visit to the Professor where PFA had offered to take charge of the abandoned animals.
Mema and her family had however disagreed to the proposition.
As a last measure, Ak Santikumar Inspector, OC Imphal West PS approached the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal yesterday for necessary orders.
The Duty Magistrate, Alek Muivah, on September 12 ordered the rescue of the dogs from the quarters.
Under the supervision of the OC, Sub Inspector Th Jeevannanda and Sub Inspector Worchipen Ngalung from Imphal West police station, PFA rescued the abandoned animals from the quarters.
Members from Manipur Dog Lovers Club also extended help in rescuing the animals.
The rescued dogs were mentally and physically unsound due to prolonged captivation and lack of proper feeding.
One of the dogs which was found sick on the first visit to the quarter later died due to a snake bite, the statement added.
PFA has urged the Principal of DM college to take necessary action against Kh Mema for her inhumane treatment of animals.
Ironically enough, Mema breeds many dogs (including foreign breeds) at her residence at Laipham Khunou Maning Leikai.
