Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the "One Day Planning Workshop on IWDP under MsDP in Ukhrul District, Manipur" MLA Dr Khashim Ruivah expressed the need for sincerity in the implementation of developmental schemes in Manipur so that people could avail the benefits.
The workshop on Integrated Watershed Development Project (IWDP) held at State Guest House, Sanjenthong was organised by the Manipur Development for Welfare of Minorities and Other Backward Classes under the sponsorship of the Union Ministry of Minorities Affairs.
The chief guest said that even though the soil quality in Ukhrul district is well known for its fertility, due to scarcity of water, production of vegetables and fruits have reduced remarkably.
He felt that the implementation of Integrated Watershed Development Project will give a hope to the people to enhance productivity.
The practice of jhoom cultivation has been checked to a remarkable level since farmers are aware of the bad impact of the practice in soil fertility through awareness created by the concerned authorities.
Likewise, if the new project on water management is taken up sincerely, people will get benefits and can enhance productivity in the district, he remarked.
In order to extract the benefits of the project, implementing agencies, concerned officials as well as people's support and cooperation is needed, the MLA said.
Asserting that use of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides is dangerous to health, Khashim Ruivah said that instead of producing health hazard products, it is better to give emphasis on producing vegetables and fruits which are harmless to consume.
He also expressed belief that authorities of the government departments and implementing agencies will take up projects related with agriculture, horticulture, sericulture and fishery in the district to enhance productivity and to improve the living standards of the people in the hill district.
Commissioner of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, IS Laishram also spoken the need to enhance the productivity of the farmers and expressed hope that the scheme will give great benefits to the people of Ukhrul district, particularly to the farmers.
He also assured of full cooperation from his department's side in the implementation of the project in the district.
The workshop was participated by representatives of various NGOs, civil organisations based in Ukhrul district and members of the ADC.
The director of MOVC, Kh Dineshchandra also attended the workshop.
