125th raising day of Manipur Police ; 'Not CMPF but State police must handle LO'

In view of the multi-ethnic nature of Manipuri society, law and order should be handled by State police for Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) would be unfamiliar with the task, asserted Chief Minister N Biren .
The Chief Minister was speaking at the inaugural session of a Police-Press workshop held today at the banquet hall of 1st Bn Manipur Rifles in connection with the 125th raising day of Manipur Police .
As Manipur is home to many ethnic groups which have their own identities and ways of life, there are many complexities in Manipuri society .
Given this reality, it would be hard for CPMF to maintain law and order.
They may assist State Police but maintenance of law and order should primarily rest with the State Police, Biren stated .
One foremost priority of the incumbent Government which is just six months old is establishment of good relation with the public .
Police too have been working to set up cordial relationship with public.
People are now cooperating with police in the latter's drives against abuse of intoxicating substances and anti-social activities.
This was a good sign, Biren remarked .
Establishment of good governance and rule of law are two primary objectives of the Government.
Media has a tremendous role to play toward achieving these objectives .
He called upon the journalist fraternity to abide by professional ethics while reporting sensitive news items .
The Government has been preparing to hold a business summit on November 21 as a part of the Manipur Sangai Festival.
Ambassadors of different countries and investors from different parts of the country and abroad have been invited to the summit, he informed the media fraternity while requesting the local media to refrain from publishing news items which may project the State in wrong light as much as possible .
The State Government is working to set up a housing colony for the journalist fraternity at Lamphelpat but the Government has a plan to develop a water body at Lamphelpat.
As such, the initiative to set up journalist housing fraternity needs a review, Biren said .
For repairing National Highways damaged by floods, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 32 crore .
He further wished that the workshop may herald a new chapter of cordial public-police relationship .
DGP LM Khaute said that Manipur Police would complete 125 years on October 19 .
Manipur Police have been organising several events in connection with the raising day and the workshop was one such event .
Sometimes police-press relation was strained but the workshop held today may help sort out all possible misunderstandings between police and press .
IGP (Adm) Soibam Ibomcha spoke on Redressal of Grievances, IGP (Zone-I) Clay Khongsai presented a paper on media management and Tengnoupal SP Dr Sarangthem Ibomcha spoke on safety of journalists during the workshop .
LMS Law College Associate Professor Dr N Pramod presented a paper on mob justice while Times of India Imphal correspondent K Sarojkumar spoke on ethical reporting .
The workshop culminated with an interaction session.
