The one day meet of the Citizens' Convention held at Guwahati yesterday has unanimously resolved to extend full support to the demand of the people to completely revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act as well to give fitting punishment to the Assam Rifles personnel responsible for killing Th Manorama and Pastor Jamkholet Khongsai.
Taking note of the sacrifices of Pebam Chittaranjan and K Memita Chanu as well as the courageous stand shown by the people of Manipur, the resolution demanded that all those booked under the NSA should be released immediately.
The resolution also urged all democratic forces of the North East to join hands and create awareness and launch a massive public movement against the Act.
The Convention also condemned the brutal State repression and rampant human rights violation perpetrated in Karbi Anglong region in Assam.
The Convention also strongly condemned the rape of three young girls by the Assam Rifles and demanded fitting punishment of the guilty personnel The Convention also came down heavily on Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil declaring a protracted war on the North East region by forming the united command structure hitherto used only in Assam and Kashmir.
The recent bomb blasts at Nagaland and Assam which claimed a number of lives also came in for heavy criticism during the Convention.
