4,000 people in relief camps: IPR minister

Information and Public Relations minister Dr Sapam Ranjan, while ad-dressing the media at DIPR Auditorium, said the situa-tion in Manipur is relatively peaceful on Tuesday com-pared to past few days and that no reports of violence and arson were reported apart from some sporadic incidents on the highways.
Dr Ranjan further said that at present there are only about 4,000 displaced people tak-ing shelter in different relief camps and regular health check -ups and psychological counselling are being given to them.
The minister also said that relief materials are being provided to affected people, adding that curfew relaxation period has also been extended up to 4 to 5 hours with im-provement in the situation that had marred the state.
The number in such camps is decreasing day by day as people are being transferred to their safe destinations including homes, he added.
Dr Ranjan maintained that confidence building measures are being taken and interac-tion with important persons and CSO leaders taking place regularly.
IPR minister Dr Ranjan stated that 216 FIRs had been lodged in connection with the violence that had marred the state.
Cau-tioning the public to surrender the snatched weapons at the earliest, the minister further informed that a total of 247 arms and 4679 ammunitions had been surrendered so far.
The minister informed that a total of around 6000 people had been given safe passage from Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Imphal, Noney and Senapati districts on Tuesday.
As of now, a total of 26,000 people had been evacuated so far, he added.
He further stated that around 1930 people, mainly students from other states, had returned to their homes safely.
Education minister Th Bas-antakumar, who also attended the press briefing, stated that Manipur government has pre - poned summer vacation for schools & colleges from May 4 to 31 and from May 15 to June 5 for the universities as security personnel are occupying some educational institutions.
Over 50 companies of paramilitary forces are stationed in the state in the wake of the violence.
