Imphal, April 08 2019:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has condemned insertion of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the election manifesto of BJP, while warning to boycott the political party if the said point is not removed from their manifesto.
Making the above statement at a press meet held at AMSU headquarters today, the student body's president Laishram Peter said that insertion of CAB in the BJP manifesto is akin to betraying the people of Manipur and the entire North East, who have been expressing strong opposition against the Bill ever since it was passed in the Lok Sabha.
Inserting this point in their manifesto is a total contradiction of the statements made by leaders of the BJP Manipur Pradesh and the State Government, he decried.
Peter stated that, at first, the leaders claimed that the CAB will not pose any threats to the North East region, specially Manipur.
Then they talked about inserting a special clause in the Bill and lastly, the State Government and the BJP Manipur Pradesh leaders made another claim that, knowing the sentiments of the people in the North East States and hearing their grievances by the Central leaders, the Bill was not introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
Such a move has raised a question on the part of BJP Manipur Pradesh regarding whether it actually cares about the people of the State, he said, adding that it clearly shows that the Central Government has failed to consider the issues and voices of the people of the North East region.
AMSU, along with the people of Manipur and NE, will be compelled to boycott BJP if the party fails to remove the Bill from its manifesto, Peter cautioned.
