27 towns to join cleanliness fray

Altogether 27 towns of the State would be competing in the third Swachh Survekshan 2018 which was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs a few days back .
Swachh Survekshan-2018 is a ranking competition of the cities and towns of the country based on infrastructure development for improved sanitation services, cleanliness and their sustainability .
Altogether 4041 towns/cities of the country would be assessed under Swachh Survekshan-2018 for ranking, informed an official source.
These include 27 towns of Manipur including Imphal .
An independent third party team would visit these towns in January-February next year for survey and marking .
The source informed that there would be changes to the methodology this year as compared to the last two editions .
As many 71 parameters based on sanitation have been incorporated and there is 34 per cent mark for proper sweeping and cleaning of commercial areas .
As per the revised methodology, commercial areas should be swept twice in a day including Sundays and festivals.
Attendance of sanitary staff engaged in sweeping and cleaning commercial areas would also be noted stringently.
Rankings of the 4041 towns/cities would be announced by March next year .
Notably, Imphal was ranked 15th among 74 towns/cities in the Swachh Survekshan 2016.But its ranking declined to 122nd in the 2017 edition.
