Senapati villages back War on Drugs drive

Ngatan and Taklung villages in Senapati district have declared themselves free of poppy.
The two villages said all standing poppy crops in the area have been destroyed.
A statement issued by the two villages said Ngatan and Taklung villages under Senapati district fully support the Government's War on Drugs.
Giving more teeth to the Government's War on Drugs, the citizens of Ngatan and Taklung village have vowed to shun illicit poppy cultivation in their areas.
To show their support, the villages carried out drives to destroy all poppy plantations in their respective areas.
The village authorities and youth volunteers have destroyed all standing poppy crops in an area of around 5 acres.

The drives to destroy all the plantations completely were carried out on Friday and Saturday last.
Huts built in the poppy fields were also completely dismantled and burnt down, they said.
Meanwhile, the headmen and authorities of the two villages have warned all individuals to shun illicit poppy cultivation.
They will not be responsible for any defaulters in future, the villages said.
A total of about 45 acres of poppy plantations in their jurisdictions have been destroyed by the villagers in a drive.
