HIV : Mom to child declines

In a significant development, mother to child transmission of HIV has come down to almost nil in the State this year.
As per information provided by Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) Project Director Dr SK Chaurasia, during mandatory checking of 57 new born babies delivered by HIV positive mothers this year only one baby was found to be infected with the virus.
He also pointed out that similar checking were carried out last year on 95 new-borns out of which three of the babies were detected to be HIV positive.
During pregnancy a HIV positive woman is prescribed/provided Navrapin pills and after 18 months of birth the child is checked to ascertain HIV/AIDS checked to ascertain HIV/AIDS infection, said the Pro"ject Director while speaking to The Sangai Express today.
Dr Chaurasia also confided that MACS is holding discussions with officials of various departments to provide source of income generation to the HIV/AIDS infected persons.
