Three Manipur University students were hospitalized at RIMS today after being hit by tear gas shells near the Manipur University Main Gate this evening at around 4.According to reports, the incident occurred when 36 MU students who were arrested from Singjamei Bazar and brought to MU Main Gate in a police vehicle refused to alight from the vehicle on being asked by the security forces.
Agitated by the stubbornness of the students, police personnel fired and lobbed tear gas shells into the vehicle forcing the students to flee from the vehicle.
In the process three students were injured while many received minor cuts and bruises.
The three injured students who have been admitted at RIMS have been identified as Laishram Sapna Devi (24) of Khurai, Meenajan Begum of Thoubal Moijing presently residing at Games Village and Sagolsem Sandhyarani (24) of Uchiwa Leirak Achouba.
Following the incident, the remaining students were taken inside the MU campus and given first aid treatment.
However 15 female students developed strange symptoms and began to vomit, added the report.
The female students were immediately rushed to RIMS in an ambulance.
However the ambulance was stopped and forced to turn back from Chingamakhong by Imphal West SDPO Gourakishore who showed no sympathy for the sick students.
The students were later treated by a private doctor at the MU campus.
Meanwhile, MUSU president L Ashirjit Luwang while strongly condemning the conduct of SDPO Gourakishore has termed the conduct as inhuman and insane which should be condemned by one and all.
