Following an invitation from Governor SS Sidhu, the Coordinators of the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup are scheduled to meet the Governor tomorrow at 3 pm at Raj Bhawan.
Accepting the invitation of the Governor, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup today said that it will present the case of the people directly to the Governor so that the same may be intimated to the Centre.
The fact that a number of well known personalities from across the country and the world have spoken out against the continued imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the State will be highlighted to the Governor, said the statement.
The AFSPA which was passed by the Indian Parliament under the stated objective of curtailing the militancy movement in Manipur and the entire North East region has only led to more suffering and even today, a large number of people continue to live under the trauma of the excesses committed by the security personnel under the immunity granted by this Act, said the statement further.
The Centre should be held responsible for the sufferings and humiliation that the people of the region have had to suffer under this draconian Act, said the Lup adding that the real pictureand the aspirations of the people will be aired to the Governor.
The meeting with the Governor is one stage for the Lup to press home the demand of the people and see what solution can be worked out, said the statement.
