New Delhi, July 31:
Deploring the Union Governments "refusal" to intervene in the "chaotic" situation in Manipur brought about by alleged killing of a woman by Assam Rifles personnel, CPI today asked the Centre to lift Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from the state.
"Despite several pleas by the delegations which have met with the Home Minister, the Government has refused to budge an inch or do anything in the matter.
This attitude is playing into the hands of insurgent groups which are already operating in Manipur," CPI central secretariat said in a statement here.
"Unless the Government wishes to create another Kashmir in the sensitive North East region of the country", CPI said, demanding that the AFSPA be immediately lifted "at least from Imphal city to begin with".
The party also urged the concerned authorities to take action against the "guilty" jawans allegedly responsible for the custodial killing of Manorama Devi on July 11.
