COVID-19: Impact on education discussed

Education Minister Dr Thokchom Radheshyam today chaired a joint consultative meeting of heads of educational institutions and discussed the impact of COVID-19 on education sector.
Heads of many schools, colleges, academicians, officials of the Education Department, representatives of parents and student organizations attended the meeting held at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound.
During the meeting, the Minister stated that even though there has been huge advancement in the field of science and technology, the whole world is still looking for a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like many other sectors, the education sector is also facing unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic.
Seeking suggestions and opinions, he said the meeting was called to find solutions and feasible ways to carry forward the education sector amid the COVID crisis.
The stakeholders had a thorough discussion on the modalities of reopening the educational institutions in the State, including admission of the students, revision of curriculum and academic calendar for 2020-21, conduct of examinations and shortage of teachers and infrastructure among others.
The meeting had six technical sessions on different themes-Education Institutions-Re-Opening & Conditionality moderated by Professor MC Arunkumar; Admission, moderated by Assistant Professor Chinglen Maisnam; Curriculum/Syllabi moderated by Dr Dhanabir Laishram; Assessment/ Examination moderated by Dr Ch Sheelaramani; Teachers Shortage moderated by Professor W Nabakumar and Infrastructure gaps moderated by Professor Amar Yumnam.
Standard operating procedures for organising the meeting such as wearing of masks, thermal scanning of the participants, use of hand sanitiser and physical distancing were maintained and followed during the meeting.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner, Higher and Technical Education M Harekrishna; Commissioner, Department of Education (S), T Ranjit Singh, Director, Department of Education (S), Th Kirankumar; Director, Higher and Technical Education, Kh Diana; Director, SCERT, Dr M Meenakumari; Chairman, COHSEM, Dr Lamabam Mahendra Singh among others.
The meeting was jointly organised by the Department of Education (S) and Higher and Technical Education.
