Unions for priority on developing school infrastructure

Imphal, September 14 2021: Representatives of Socialist Students' Union Manipur (SSUM) and All Meetei Pangal Students' Union Manipur (AMPSUM) met education minister S Rajen on Tuesday and pressed the government for prioritising development of requisite infrastructure of government schools and teachers' quarters before resumption of normal physical classes.

Speaking to media persons after meeting the education minister, SSUM president S Yaima informed that the two students' unions had inspected several government schools and came across several inadequacies.

With the increase of intake capacity in several Higher Secondary schools in Imphal and the upgradation of High Schools to Higher Secondary Schools, more students have been admitted this time when compared to the rate of enrolment in previous years.

However, as laboratory, library, class rooms, etc, in most of the government schools have been remaining stagnate for the last ten years; students might face inconveniences even in attending their classes.

As such, the unions met the education minister and demanded development of infrastructures before the resumption of normal physical classes, he added.

While confiding that the education minister gave his assurance to look into their proposals after discussing with officials concerned and to conduct inspection of the schools for initiating infrastructure development wherever necessary, Yaima said the unions will soon assess construction and other developmental works in government schools located in rural areas.

Further stating that there are reports of incomplete constructions of teachers' quarters and class rooms of government schools in rural areas, he urged the authorities concerned to complete the constructions without delay.
