Imphal, October 05 2021:
While pointing out that Right to Information (RTI) Act is an important legislation, MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan has called for judicious use of the Act so as to bring about transparency in the administration.
He also advised officials concerned to provide timely information to the applicants during his speech at a state level workshop conducted as part of RTI Week by Manipur Information Commission at Debala Multipurpose Hall, Sangai Bazar, Hiyangthang on Tuesday.
Dr Ranjan, who is also the advisor to CM (health), opined that the number of RTI applications has been increasing with the public becoming more aware of the provisions of the Act.
The Act was passed to maintain transparency by providing information on works taken up by the government to the public.
However, there are instances of some people misusing the Act.
Some submit applications over trivial issues and at the same time, some of officials responsible to provide information unnecessarily delay in providing the information sought.
For instances, many of the works taken up by different departments are uploaded on their respective websites and yet many seek information for such works.
Such activities undermine the importance of the Act, he contended.
He also urged the officials concerned to provide the right information in time.
State Chief Information commissioner Oinam Sunil presided over the event during which senior advocate Dr Ch Narendra and advocate Pushpa Gurumayum spoke on 'Relevance of RTI Act, 2005' and 'Jurisdictional Crisis: Information Commissioners vs High Courts' respectively as resource persons.
