Langban Kauna Crafts fair begins

A 10-day 'Langban Crafts Exhibition' exclusively for reed (Kauna) crafts organised by Luwangpdkpa Handicrafts Producer Company Limited under the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) of Ministry of textiles commenced from Friday at Luwangsangbam.
Attending the opening function as chief guest, Industrial Art Expert and designer Jocelyn Akoijam highlighted that Kauna (water reed) is closely related with the socio-cultural history of Manipur since olden days.
As the youth in particular do not want to buy products that are harmful to the environment, there is high demand of Kauna products, she added.
Commending the inherent skills of artisans of Mani pur, Jocelyn said that Kauna products could be exported to other countries after ensuring value addition to the finished goods.
Urging artisans not to join training courses just for receiving stipend, she emphasised that participants strive to gain maximum knowledge and skills from the subject experts so to seriously venture into profession of making kauna products, thereby creating jobs and enhancing economy of the land.
The opening function of the exhibition was attended by Koirengei Gram Panchayat member Bimola as president and Handicrafts Service Center assistant director Yumnam Jagyashori as guest of honour.
Around 30 artisans are exhibiting their products in the exhibition.
