Imphal, October 29 2021:
In connection with the upcoming assembly election, Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) would be launching a campaign for ensuring a drug free election.
Speaking to media persons at its office, MSF drug affairs secretary Oinam Premdas Khuman noted that people have been witnessing use of alcohol and other addictive substances during election campaign.
The act of indulging in addictive substances among the voters continues without any restriction as the influence of election is powerful.
With an objective to increase the number of voters, some candidates used different means and agents to ensure adequate supply of addictive substances, he observed.
The mass intoxication of people has made the youth in particular to become addicts, causing violent confrontations, leading to deterioration in their health conditions and'even alienating them from their responsibilities, he maintained.
Urging elders in the families and local Meira Paibi groups to look into the matter so as to save the youth in particular, Premdas questioned how development would be brought if voters are intoxicated during election campaign even if the candidates are pledging corruption free and progressive society.
While highlighting increasing movements of addictive substances as the election nears, he urged the government to take up effective measures to restrict such movements.
The candidates should stop wooing electors using addictive substances to win the election, he added.
