Imphal, August 10 2022:
All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM) has stated that its 20 women activists participated in the agitation organised by National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi demanding 50 per cent quota for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
The agitation concluded on Tuesday.
In a release, AMNM secretary L Sumatibala informed that activists included its president M Sakhi Devi and state leader Kshetri Tama.
On the last day of the protest, both the women leaders spoke on the significant roles played by women historically in Manipur including the Nupi Lal in 1939, and shared that continuing their path of courage, the women of Manipur have travelled thousands of kilometres to take part in the protest for 50 per cent reservation for women.
The release also quoted NFIW general secretary Annie Raja as stating that the demand for 50 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies has been raised as the time of women empowerment has come.
The nation has seen many cases of atrocities against women including rape, domestic violence, etc.
Hence, it is very much necessary that women have 50 per cent representation in the Parliament and assemblies to address the issue, she added.
