Imphal, March 05 2023:
While remarking that other communities might have not look down on Kom community if it had not been divided into different smaller factions; United Committee Manipur (UCM) president Joychandra Konthoujam has called upon the Kom community to refrain from doing anything which could affect its identity, while advising the Kom Union to take a firm stand that "Kom is Kom" and work for bringing unity.
The UCM president was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of a two-day celebration of 'Berkap Leh Reiju Rehoi' festival of Kom tribe at Ichum Keirap Kom village, Kangpokpi district on Sunday.
Joychandra said that one must never forget that a community without its culture is bound to disappear one day or the other.
We must never ignore the cultural wealth bestowed by our forefathers and it is our duty, as the descendents, to protect and promote the culture, he emphasised.
Joychandra continued the Manipur is inhabited by many communities, who have been living in harmony since time immemorial.
Thus, the major communities should not try to take over the smaller communities and instead work together for promotion and preservation of respective communities.
He also pointed out that Kom community has had close relationship with the Meitei community and the bond will continue to remain inseparable despite the passage of time.
