KSO holds discourse to check drug menace

Deeply concerned over increasing cases of drug abuse amongst the youngsters, KSO Churachandpur organised a one-day public consultation on 'Drug Abuse and its Mitigation' with civil society organisations, church leaders, village authorities and youth clubs at Kuki Inpi Complex, Tuibong on Saturday.
While delivering the keynote address, Minlal Gangte, general secretary KSO Churachandpur, informed that the KSO has been carrying an anti-drug drive since March 2022 during which 20-50 students found using brown sugar and WY tables are being rounded up each day.
The student leader then stressed the need for proactive involvement in the anti-drug campaign by church leaders, student community and others.
Since launch of the drive in March more than 100 youngsters, majority of t hem using WY, and peddlers were pulled up on a daily basis, he said, and pointed out the trend has changed from 2022 as most of the drug users are taking brown sugar because it has no smell and even minor girls are found peddling the same even at classrooms secretly.
Many Underage students have been found taking such illicit drugs, the KSO leader added.
During the public consultation, speeches were delivered by additional SP Hasby Haokip, pastor Onkhomang Haokip, Dr Hegin Tungdim, KIC president Letpu Haokip, KKL president Kamthang Haokip, and KSO Churachandpur president NJ Haoneo Baite, among others.
The consultation also adopted various declarations aimed at jointly fighting drug abuse and network of peddling.
Those gathered acknowledged the concerns of KSO and pledged to support its campaign in saving the youngsters from falling prey to substance abuse.
The other resolutions included total prohibition on poppy cultivation; collective efforts and approach by church leaders, VAs, political leaders, law enforcement officials for curbing the social crimes; management/activation of district jail and drugs de-addiction camps; conduct awareness campaigns against drugs menace and activation of village wise pro-vigilant groups with involvement of all VAs; formation anti-drugs cell with members drawn from all the CSOs.
