Donating blood benefits donor's body: Dr Lalthari Hmar

As elsewhere across the globe, State Blood Cell, NHM observed World Blood Donor Day on the theme of Donating Blood is an act of solidarity, join the efforts and save lives' at the conference hall of Manipur Voluntary Health Association, Wangkhei on Tuesday.
The observance was organised in collaboration with Manipur Voluntary Health Association, Association of Voluntary Blood Donor, People Resources Development Association and JNIMS Blood Bank.
Speaking at the valedictory of the function, Directorate of Health Services additional director (MC) Dr Lalthari Hmar informed that people in the age group of 18-64 years can donate blood as not only it helps in saving precious lives, but also is beneficial to the emotional and physical health of the donors by reducing stress and heart ailments, as per a report.
In his speech as the president of the observance, JNIMS Blood Bank senior MO Dr K Surjit said that blood donation camps are an annual event held every now and then.
Donors donate blood with the hope of addressing any potential blood shortage in the state, and as such, there is need to encourage and recognise the contribution of the donors.
He continued that although medical science has developed significantly, it is still impossible to make/manufacture blood.
He then informed that once the blood is donated, it is not used immediately for transfusion, but during time of emergencies including childbirth.
State Blood Cell, NHM SPO Dr H Khamkhanpau Simte and Imphal West DTO Dr Aken Singh were present as guests of honour.
Later, certificates were distributed to those who donated blood.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of RIMS Authority, RIMS Blood Donors' Community and Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee jointly observed World Blood Donor Day at the OPD complex of the institute on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, RIMS director Prof A Santa highlighted the important role played by donors and stressed the need for people to donate blood so as to save precious lives.
In his speech, RIMS Dean (Academic) and RIMS Blood Donors' Community advisor Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam informed that anyone over the age of 18 years can donate blood.
Woman can donate 3 times a year, while men can donate up to 4 times a year.
If the number of blood donors is large, there will be no shortage of blood in the state, he said while stating that the annual blood donation programme had been delayed for 2 years due to Covid 19, before being organised this year on June 14 .
RIMS MS Prof N Sanjib Singh, Transfusion Medicine Department Head Prof A Barindra Sharma and RIMS Blood Donors' Community advisor Dr Laishram Trinity Meitei attended as the presidium members.
As part of the event, blood donors were presented certificates.
