DMs order deposit of firearms

District magistrates of both Chandel and Tengnoupal on Wednesday issued orders asking all the licensed gun owners to deposit their weapons at the nearest police station.
Citing maintenance of law and order in connection with the upcoming assembly elections slated to be conducted in March next for issuance of the notifications, orders issued by district magistrates Mayanglambam Rajkumar (Chandel) and LourembamBikram (Tengnoupal) specified that in compliance with the direction of the Home Department, all the licensed arms holders must deposit their fire-arms recorded in their respective licenses to the nearest police stations with immediate effect.
"Failing which the licence is liable to be punished for violation of state government instruction under the relevant provision Arms Act, 1959 read with Arms Rules, 2016," cautioned the DMs.
Apart from depositing the licensed firearms, all allied service of arms licence except renewal service will not be processed in the districts concerned until further instruction or order or completion of election process, whichever is earlier, said the orders Meanwhile, superintendent of police, Churachandpur on Tuesday issued an order asking all persons holding licensed arms in Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts to deposit them to the nearest police stations from the date of issuing of the order.
It said that the order was issued for proper maintenance of law and order and warned of taking punitive action against those failing to deposit their licensed arms.
The SP also informed that the arms deposited will be kept safely.
