Imphal, September 30 2022:
The Manipur Hill District Disabled Union (MHDDU) on Friday demanded posting of special doctors in all the hill districts to assist the persons with disabilities (PwDs) in obtaining the Unique Disability Identification card (UDID)Zdisability certificate.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club, MHDDU president Paul Rozarlien said that due to logistics problems, official apathy and lack of awareness, over 50 per cent of the PwDs in hill districts are yet to possess UDID consequently depriving the PwDs in hill districts from availing benefits of various welfare schemes of the government.
While pointing out that there are 22,741 PwDs in hills district as per the census report 2011, he said owing to insensitivity of the enumerators some district with high population have low PwDs percentage though their numbers are far greater than the official record.
The number of persons with disabilities is likely to be increase if they are identified based on the 21 categories mentioned in the Act, he opined.
The president appealed to the state government to provide services of special doctors for assisting all the PwDs in obtaining UDID so as to bring the PwDs of hill districts to the mainstream and ensure they have equal opportunity and enjoy con stitutional rights.
