Skill training programme for weavers begins

Imphal, October 21 2021:
A 45-day long training programme for skill up-gradation of handloom weavers under Ministry of Textiles' SAMARTH Scheme organised by Weavers' Service Centre Imphal at Sintha Handloom and Handicrafts Complex CFC, Thongju Part II (Keirao BLC) commenced from Thursday.
Speaking at the inauguration function, Sintha Hand-loom and Handicrafts president Sougrakpam Bhubon informed that SAMARTH Scheme is an important project of the Ministry of Textiles aimed at creating opportunities to the handloom weavers to enhance their skills in the craft.
Apart from stipends, other added benefits are being provided to the trainees, he added.
The president also revealed that handloom sector is the second largest employment sector in the state, second only to agriculture and the state has around four lakh weavers.
He also expressed optimism of the schemes' success in the state.
The inauguration function was also attended by Bashikhong ZP member Chirom Jasowanta as chief guest, Thongju Part II GP pradhan Nameirakpam Kanon Chanu as president and District Handloom and Textiles Imphal East project manager Ch Tombi Devi and Weavers' Service Centre assistant director (Weaving) Ibohal Singh as guests of honour.
