UWRD demands probe into ethnic violence

The United Women's Right Defenders (UWRD) has appealed to the Governor of Manipur to order investigation into the incident leading to the outbreak of communal violence in the state and take up necessary actions against those involved.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday, UWRD convenor M Bina cited the government report regarding the com-munal violence between two communities that a total of 78 people have been killed, 200 have gone missing, 1400 houses have been brunt and many properties have been destroyed beyond repair.
Of the devastation caused by the communal riot, the fate of youths who are the future pillars of the society remains uncertain and children in trau-ma, she said while adding that the people are still haunted by the Meitei-Pangal, Naga-Kuki and Kuki-Paite clashes.
Stating that Meitei people are facing war with the heavily armed Kuki militants who are under Soo with the govern-ment and that the public are facing serious problems as prices of essential commod-ities have sky rocketed while the government is remaining as a mute spectator, Bina appealed to the Governor to probe into the incident leading to the outbreak of communal riots in the state and take up necessary actions against those involved in triggering the violence.
She also urged authority concerned to construct hous-es of those people affected by the communal violence and provide security to the displaced people to ensure their safe return to home.
