Imphal, October 16 2022:
Continuing the adoption of Sangai in the Sangai Captive Breeding Farm located at Iroisemba, Keishamthong MLA Sapam Nishikant along with the Sangai Express Manipuri edition editor Khogendra Khomdram donated Rs 5,52,744 to Manipur Zoological Garden Society on Sunday.
The donation amount was handed over to Manipur Zoological Garden director L Biramangol and chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Longjam Joykumar in a simple function held at the residence of MLA Nishikant on Sunday morning.
Speaking on the occasion, the MLA recounted that he has been adopting Sangai at the breeding farm in Iroisemba for the last four years as an initiative to do something for the state.
He also urged people of the state to contribute their mite if they love Manipur.
Just making statements of loving the state and doing nothing cannot bring anything good, he remarked while declaring that he will do everything he could for Sangai as long as he lives.
L Biramangol thanked the MLA for his love and initiative for Sangai.
He emphasised on the importance of wildlife in the environment and called for protecting and conserving wildlife.
He further informed that number of Sangai at the breeding farm has increased from 14 to 18 at present.
Two more fawns are expected by next year, which will further increase the population of Sangai.
At the same time, there are nine Sangai in the Zoo, he added.
Longjam Joykumar said that the department has been facing hardships in feeding the animals at the Zoo due to low budget allocation.
In such a situation, it is a good initiative for the public to come up and adopt animals at the zoo.
The department is also planning to take launch a campaign to collect donations from animal lovers on their special occasions such as Ipaan Thaba, birthday, among others, he said.
