Imphal, October 03 2021:
World Meetei Convention (WMC), Hojai Zonal Committee along with Meetei Civil Society Organisation, Assam on Saturday convened a public meeting at AMSP Bhawan Hojai and resolved to demand for inclusion of Meetei in the list of Scheduled Tribes of the country.
In a release, WMC Assam president Yumnam Nabakishofe said that fulfilment of the long-standing demand for inclusion of the Meetei community residing in Assam and Tripura in the in ST list would be difficult until the inclusion of Meetei in Manipur, which is their birthplace.
Urging the Manipur CM to send recommendation for inclusion of Meetei community in the ST list without further delay so as to save the indigenous community from extinction, he recounted that various memorandum have been submitted to the Prime Minister, Manipur chief minister and Assam chief minister in this regard.
While pointing out that United Manipur Association of Assam has been demanding inclusion of Meetei in the ST list since 1995, Nabakishore said that the non-inclusion of Meetei residing in Manipur in the ST list has stymied the demand for inclusion of Meetei residing in Assam in the ST list as well.
