Imphal, July 01 2022:
Different organisations have condoled the loss of lives in the Tupul railway sub station landslide tragedy that occurred at Makhuam village (Marangching Part 5) in Noney district.
IPSA, PANDM, IPAK, ACOAM Lup, CLK, Kanglamei, KIL and KSA, in a joint statement, termed it as a tragedy and mourned the deaths of Territorial Army personnel, VSC construction workers and locals.
They also prayed for early recovery of the injured victims.
The joint statement said that the soil types in the hills of Manipur vary from place to place.
While some may be rocky, some are soft soil which is prone to landslide in the absence of natural barriers such as forest covers.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, local residents are expressing dissatisfaction over the attitude of the authority concerned when they had earlier approached for constructing protection wall, drainage system and other measures to prevent such tragedy after area was cleared for the project.
Many are claiming the incident as a man-made calamity and not a natural one, the statement said.
It then appealed to the authority concerned to take extra precautions at all other work sites of the railway project.
At the same time, the state as well as the country is taking pride in having the world's tallest railway bridge.
The statement drew attention of the authority to review their expert assessment to see if the bridge could withstand the vibration of rail transport considering the loose soil underneath so that possible tragic incidents could be avoided.
