Siege of Imphal commemorated

Imphal, March 29, 2014:
The "Siege of Imphal" by the Imperial Japanese Army on March 28, 1944 during the 2nd World War (WWII) was commemorated yesterday at Kangpokpi, a town, 45 kilometers away from Imphal.
The function was jointly organized by Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation as a part of the commemoration of 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal (WWII).
Most of the speakers in the function stressed about the significance of organizing the function.
Kangpokpi is the location where the Imperial Japanese Army�s 15th division cut the vital Imphal- Kohima road on March 28th 1944 during the Second World War.
This action was carried out by two companies of 3rd battalion, 67th regiment, also known as the Honda Raiding Unit under Captain Honda.
The cutting of the road led to the encircling of the allied forces in and around Imphal plain by Japanese Army.
The siege of Imphal by Japanese forces lasted nearly 3 months.
A photo exhibition on 2nd world war and cultural program by different colourful communities were also held during the function graced by Haojakham Chongloi, chairman of Kanggui Elders� Forum as chief guest, Seimang Khingsai, President of Kuki Inpi, Sadar Hill as guest of honour and Arambam Angamba, co-convenor of the organizing committee as president.
