Imphal, November 28 2021:
Condemning the state police for stopping Congress party's Jan Jagran Abhiyan rally and dishonouring the party flags and symbol by tearing them apart in Kshetrigao assembly constituency on Saturday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) demanded the authority concerned to take up appropriate action against SDPO Imphal East for his excessive conduct.
Addressing a press meet at Porompat Thawanthaba Leikai on Sunday, MPCC general secretary Punamrani said that Saturday's rally carried out by Congress supporters under her supervision was a democratic and peaceful programme.
The rally was part of AICC's nationwide Jan Jagran Abhiyan campaign against hike in prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and other essential commodities.
It was organised in public interest in a very peaceful manner.
The rally was flagged off from Porompat Thawanthaba Leikai and police tried to stop it along the DC road.
However, a police officer allowed them to continue the rally without shouting slogans.
As the rally reached Porompat Lambui road and was about to reach the culmination point, a police team led by the SDPO intercepted them and used excessive force to stop them.
The SDPO himself snatched party flags from women participants, tore them and kicked them.
Decrying the conduct of the SDPO, who dishonoured the party flags and symbol, she said that Congress party takes the matter seriously.
A report has been sent to the party's election observer and high level committee members for pursuing the matter, she said.
