Imphal, September 27 2022:
Reacting to report of observing Zeliangrong Martyrs' Day on September 22 to mark the assassination of social activist Athuan Abonmai by a faction of ZUF led by S Kamson, who merged with another armed outfit, Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has termed the report as an act of misleading the public and creating confusion.
In a statement, ZUF secretary information and publicity John Pame urged the faction group to clarify the misleading declaration of Zeliangrong Martyrs' Day on September 22 .
The statement also termed the declaration as inappropriate and illogical as the group is neither authorised nor a represented authority of Zeliangrong community to declare any day of importance for the people.
ZUF does not object or deny observing the death anniversary of late Athuan Abonmai.
However, the day of his death can never be taken into account as Zeliangrong Martyrs' Day though his leadership and contribution to the people is recognised and appreciated.
The right body to declare such a day of importance in connection with the death of any Zeliangrong personality whose contribution or nature of death can be credited as martyrdom is ZCSO.
Any day of martyrdom to be observed must be based on authentic and significant role of patriotism and contributions made for the cause of the people.
The self-styled S Kamson and his goon gang have no authority to Supersede the people's mandate to declare Zeliangrong Martyrs' Day.
The first ZUF martyr was accorded to late Paule Nkuame as decided by an act of resolution to observe March 5 every year as ZUF Martyrs' Day since 2012 and the decision stands valid till date, the statement said.
It then appealed to all right thinking Zeliangrong citizens to avoid being swayed by such information or emotional impression made by unauthorised individuals or organisations.
It also cautioned all concerned against misusing the authority and historical importance.
