Sensitisation prog on POCSO Act, child marriage held

Imphal, March 26 2023:
District Child Protection Unit, Imphal East organised a one-day sen sitisation programme on POCSO Act, 2012 and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 at Lamboikhul Ireima community hall, Imphal East on Sunday.
Makeng Dolaithabi ZP former member Ningthoukhongjam Sanatomba, who attended the programme as chief guest, said that underage marriage is prevalent in the state even though everybody is aware that it is illegal.
Misuse of mobile phone has been one of the leading causes of early marriage in the state, he pointed while stressing the need for parental control in mobile use and educating their children about relevant Acts and provisions.
According to district child protection officer (non institutional care), Imphal East, Sushma Elangbam, the programme was organised to sensitise the public about the provisions of POCSO Act and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act to discourage child marriage and crimes against children.
There are instances of family members of victims negotiating with some monetary compensation from the perpetrators of crime without seeking legal help, she noted and cautioned that such a practice will affect the victim in their lives.
While urging for seek ing legal help in such cases, she informed that the unit will organise similar programmes in educational institutions to ere ate awareness among the children and stakeholders concerned.
Lamboikhul Develop ment Committee (LDC) president Sanjenbam Imoba and Anouba Mangai Village Level Federation (VLF) president YumleTnbam Memi Leima attended the programme as guests of honour.
In the technical session, former MCPCR member and former chairman of CWC Imphal East Keisham Pradipkumar and Imphal East district Child Marriage Prohibition Officer & DCPU legal-cum-probation officer Chongtham Roshan Kha-Nganba spoke on POCSO Act 2012 and The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 respectively as resource persons.
